2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Maurice Evans, DE, Penn State
Maurice Evans took over the starting defensive end job at Penn State in 2007 and ran with it. After recording just 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in spot duty as a freshman, Evans' production was off the charts as a sophomore. Last year he managed to rack up 54 tackles, an astounding 21.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, broke up 3 passes in coverage, and forced 5 fumbles (one of which he returned 55 yards to set up a score). He might be able to play defensive end in the NFL, but his speed, size, and pass rushing skills also make him an excellent 3-4 outside linebacker prospect. He has hurt himself with his off field behavior -- he was suspended 3 games for a marijuana arrest -- and has lost his starting job to sophomore Aaron Maybin. With the NFL cracking down on player conduct, teams can no longer afford to draft players as highly if they have character issues. No team will spend the money on a player that may miss a quarter of the season at any given moment because of off the field issues. Evans decided in January to declare for the draft, in a somewhat curious move. In 10 games this season, Evans recorded just 34 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks. With Maybin moving on to the NFL, another season at Penn State to show off his skills could have raised his draft stock by several rounds. He has first day talent, but teams might not be willing to pick him until the fourth or even fifth round. If Evans can stay out of trouble and have a good showing at his workouts, he may be able to salvage a third round selection this year. Maurice Evans had a horrible NFL Combine workout. He ran a 4.99 second 40 yard dash, which is much slower than expected. He also managed just 17 reps on the bench press, which also isn't encouraging. Evans will likely drop to the sixth or seventh round, IF he's drafted at all. Teams may not be in the market for a disappointing end prospect with a history full of red flags.
