2013 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Phillip Thomas, SS, Fresno State

Fresno State safety Phillip Thomas is an under-appreciated prospect who put together a great collegiate career with the Bulldogs. He played at an elite-level in the WAC and Mountain West conferences.

Thomas possesses adequate size and strength and can work the entire field as a deep safety. Not a burner, but has sufficient speed to play center field. Anticipates routes well and can diagnose multiple routes quickly. A legit ball hawk with good hands. Excels in zone coverage and can handle his own in man. Reliable tackler and can bring down a bigger receiver with authority.

Injuries prematurely ended his 2011 season. He is also susceptible to double moves, but is still improving as a football player. Above average vision and can play downhill against the run. Looks to lay the wood, yet maintains good technique by wrapping the legs and not relying on collision tackling. If he grabs an interception, he is a threat to return it for a score. Best fit at a free safety.

Thomas projects as a third round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.
