2012 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Ryan Bergen, DE, Michigan

Ryan Van Bergen is a defensive line prospect that was a team captain and led the Wolverines in sacks and tackles for loss last season.

Van Bergen has been dealing with an injury that he suffered in the 2012 Sugar Bowl. This has kept him from working out until his recent pro day at the University of Michigan. He was unable to play in any of the senior postseason games and missed an invite to the combine. This really hurts his chances of being drafted.

He posted a 30-inch vertical, benched 225 pounds 31 times, ran a 4.9 40 and a 4.4 20-yard shuttle. These results don't jump off the page, but for a fringe prospect looking to work his way into becoming a draft pick and not an undrafted free agent, Van Bergen fared very well.

Van Bergen may be able to play under tackle (outside the offensive guard) or left defensive end. He'll need to play special teams to hold down a roster spot should he make it at the next level. He is too undersized to play DT for most teams and is essentially untouchable for 3-4 defenses since they require very large and athletic players who can consistently handle double teams.
