2012 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

Minnifield was one of the more experienced players in college football, having been at Virginia for five years. He redshirted in 2007, played in every game as a freshman and sophomore as a backup on defense and a starter on special teams, and he started ever since. The star cornerback picked off six passes in 2010, second best in the ACC. In 12 games as a senior, Minnifield had seven tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three interceptions, and eight pass breakups. He did not return kicks and punts in 2011 simply because he was too valuable an asset for the Cavalier defense.

Minnifield has good size for his position, standing at 6'0'' and 185 pounds. He generally runs in the 4.4s in the 40-yard dash and has been clocked as fast as 4.38 from that distance. The Lexington, KY native also has a great vertical leap, so he can play even bigger than his size suggests. Minnifield has a superb nose for the ball and is a big hitter, however he can sometimes get sloppy with his fundamentals and miss tackles. He works well in zone coverage but it remains to be seen if he can be a man-to-man shutdown corner at the next level. Minnifield will likely be an early second-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, although he could sneak into the first round if there is a run on cornerbacks.
