Week 15: RB Roundup

We take a closer look at the current and future running back scenarios

Carolina Panthers

DeAngelo Williams; Mike Tolbert

Current scenario: The Panthers will once again be without the services of Jonathan Stewart. Last week against the Saints Stewart suffered a torn MCL in his right knee. At this time the Panthers are saying Stewart will miss at least this week's game against the Jets. This means Williams will see a bulk of the carries against the Jets' second ranked run defense.

Future scenario: Carolina hosts a tough Jets run defense this weekend and fantasy owners with better options than DeAngelo Williams would be wise to use them. Williams is averaging just over eight fantasy points per game. Against one of the league's better run defenses Williams will likely struggle to reach his season average.

Minnesota Vikings

Adrian Peterson; Toby Gerhart

Current scenario: Adrian Peterson sustained a mid-foot injury in the second quarter of last Sunday's game against the Ravens. Further examination of the foot revealed no major injury and Peterson announced shortly thereafter that he would be on the field this Sunday against the Eagles. However, the Vikings' front office has said otherwise and seeing as Minnesota is no longer in playoff contention, one has to wonder if we'll see AP on the field again this season.

Future scenario: It sounds like Peterson won't be on the field this Sunday when the Vikings host Philadelphia. This means fourth year man Toby Gerhart will take over lead running back duties. This assumes Gerhart's strained hamstring doesn't keep him off the field. With just 36 carries on the season, Gerhart has rushed for 283 yards for an average of 7.9 yards per carry and for his career Gerhart is averaging a very respectable 4.7 yards per carry. Gerhart would be a nice add for owners this weekend and possibly beyond.

Washington Redskins

Alfred Morris; Roy Helu

Current scenario: To say Washington's offense has been struggling these past few weeks would be an understatement. The Redskins have failed to score 20 points in four straight games and as a result starting quarterback Robert Griffin III has been benched. Replacing RGIII will be second year man Kirk Cousins. Cousins has completed 45 of 73 attempts with four touchdowns and two interceptions in his career. With little known about the man out of Michigan State, we have to wonder just how well this offense will perform with him under center.

Future scenario: Alfred Morris' success these final few games of the year will depend on the play of Kirk Cousins. If Cousins plays well then Morris should post good numbers. This weekend Washington heads to Atlanta where they'll face the league's 30th ranked run defense. The Falcons defense has allowed the sixth most fantasy points to running backs this season.
