Week 9: Player Upgrades

These players' stock is rising. This week's picks include Cam Newton, Michael Vick, Mikel Leshoure, Jonathan Stewart, and Andre Roberts.

So we all know what to do here. Titus Young was a widely measured fantasy sleeper this offseason and his very slow-start earned him a drop in most leagues. After putting up nine catches for 100 yards and two scores against the normally troublesome Seattle Seahawks, this is a big wake-up call for all fantasy owners. With defenses triple-teaming Calvin Johnson every play, Young is this week's hottest waiver wire commodity because of his expanded role as Detroit's No. 2 WR. Put in a claim for him and do not look back. He has 17 targets in his last two games and if those numbers persist, he will finish among the Top 30 WRs after hardly existing for the six games of 2012. Long-term value looks pretty good excluding Week 10's game against Minnesota. What can only add to his scoring is QB Matthew Stafford's continued progress. Every season, players surface in the second half and you definitely do not want him scoring points for someone else's team.

Jermaine Gresham is playing well this season, but lingers on the cusp of being a starter in most leagues. Now it is time for him to prove his worth in this week's advantageous matchup against Denver. The Broncos have allowed TEs to score three TDs in their last two contests and six TDs in their eight. LB Joe Mays is out for the season and Denver loses a lot of athleticism by having to play LB Keith Brooking more. The tight end position is a hot mess right now. Any tiny quirk or crack in an opponent's defense is worth mentioning and considering. What is holding Gresham back is a lack of targets and this has been an issue throughout his career. He has not reached double-digit targets since Week 10 of 2010. Just store this information in the back of your mind: if his targets improve to around nine per game, he goes from reliable backup to reliable starter overnight.
